about

"If your pictures aren't good enough, you aren't close enough.”
Robert Capa

"Margaritas On The Lawn" is inspired by the work of the great war photographer Robert Capa, by my love of good journalism & by my encounters with one journalist who had lost their way. I don’t think many of us set out to be bad, unprincipled or uncaring but how easily even our most cherished ideals can become compromised when we settle for an easy life.

I released a demo of this song exactly 8 years ago. It was my first release on any platform and I think it surprised a few people – not least me! I have re-recorded many of the parts for this new version, including the lead vocal, but some original bits have survived the cull. It has also been mixed and mastered by talented industry pro Carl Rosamond (The Wedding Present, CUD, Nile Rodgers & Chic, The Charlatans, British Sea Power, The Vaccines, Rag’n’Bone Man).

This song is dedicated to my nephew James Sutcliffe.

lyrics

If your photographs aren't good enough

You're not close enough

If the words aren't the ones that they said

They'll never be enough

You used to call it your reason, your inspiration

That Capa hanging over your bed

Go ask that woman when they shaved her head

About dignity and being bad

They always made you smile with their guile

But you never thought you'd be one of them
All those tricks, supercilious pricks
Now you don't even trust your own friends

Oh, how did you get so cold inside
?
Oh, when did you get so lost, so tired
?

Did you see yourself there on the lawn

Sipping margaritas with Bob and Carl

While The Post beat a path to the door

Of the last Englishman out of Vietnam?

Now you make up words they never said

But you knew they would if they'd thought of them

Next day they're lying there on the page

And you can hardly hide your disappointment

Oh, how did you get so cold inside?

Oh, when did you get so lost, so tired?

If your photographs aren't good enough

You're not close enough
